San Jose-based Altera reported earnings of 47 cents a share, well above the 44 cents predicted by analysts surveyed by First Call/Thomson Financial. The firm's net income rose 92 percent to $98.3 million from $51.1 million a year ago.

"The company had an outstanding quarter, it basically surprised most if not all the analyst community at how well they did," said Christopher Danely, an industry analyst with Merrill Lynch who raised Altera's price target to $140 from $120.

Every firm but Needham & Co., issued a 'buy' or 'strong buy' rating on Altera. Needham reiterated a 'hold' rating.

Companies such as Cisco Systems and Lucent Technologies use Altera chips in switches. Altera rose $7.81 to $111.06 on the Nasdaq yesterday.

Ten analysts also issued reports on Gateway after the PC maker posted earnings of 37 cents per share yesterday, a penny above analyst estimates.

Ten reports looking at PMC Sierra were also issued today, after the chipmaker announced earnings of 30 cents per share, well above the 19 cents per share predicted by analysts.

Analysts also reported on Juniper Networks, a maker of Internet routers. Juniper reported earnings of 6 cents a share yesterday, compared with a loss of 4 cents a share last year.
