slacker: For new "phones", the key is working out the software chain. The hardware is relatively simple (not simple absolutely but relative to software complexities).

With the software, there is matching the embedded software with whatever bells and whistles your subscribers want.

Then there is testing of the software within the phone itself.

Then there is making sure the entire phone set works at optimum within the operators network.

Suggest all this takes time.

If you wish to dump untested stuff on the consumer, the PC system for software, no need.

But for "phones" within an operators system, it makes sense to be relatively certain all repeat all ducks are in a row - that takes time.
