Bush, as is expected, chooses someone other than Arizona Sen. John McCain or Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Ridge as his running mate. They said that while McCain and Ridge would alienate some conservative Republicans, McCain likely would draw independents to Bush while Ridge would help the Texas governor win the vital state of Pennsylvania. ``Bush would show real leadership and even courage by taking either one of these guys,'' said one Democratic Party leader, speaking on the condition of anonymity. ``But instead it looks like he is going to take the easy way out by picking a non- problem, non-controversial candidate.'' Bush's top choices on Sunday appeared to be former Defense Secretary Dick Cheney, who has headed up Bush's vice presidential selection process, and former Sen. John Danforth of Missouri. Danforth and Cheney, unlike Ridge, reflect the party's official stand against abortion. And both are seen more as team players than the independent-minded McCain, who gave Bush a surprisingly tough race in the Republican presidential primary. A Gore campaign official said McCain could give Bush a boost in the polls and help him in California, while a Ridge selection would show that the Texas governor is not beholden to the anti-abortion religious right. ``Ridge, in my mind, would give Bush his biggest boost,'' one party official said. ``As soon as he (Bush) makes it official and doesn't pick Ridge, we are going to go after him for chickening out to the radical right,'' the official said. Democratic Party and campaign officials seemed buoyed by signs Bush would pass over both McCain and Ridge. ``It is a question of both relief and a little exuberance,'' a top Democratic Party official said. In Austin, Texas, Bush spokesman Ari Fleischer said: ``The governor has not decided who he will pick, but whoever it is it will give the Democrats fits because it will be a ticket that will restore honor to the White House.''
