KPN, Four Others Win Dutch Wireless Licenses; Total EU2.7 Bln
By Adri den Broeder

Scheveningen, Netherlands, July 24 (Bloomberg) -- Royal KPN NV, Libertel NV and the three other companies that currently run Dutch mobile-phone networks paid a total of 5.918 billion guilders ($2.5 billion or 2.7 billion euros) to win five new wireless licenses in the government's auction.

Libertel, which declined to comment on its bid, paid 1.573 billion guilders for one of the two higher-capacity licenses, according to the Ben group, owned by Tele Danmark A/S, Belgacom, and Deutsche Telekom AG. KPN said it paid 1.567 billion guilders for the other larger license.

The total is a quarter of the 10 billion euros the government had hoped to reap. Licenses for faster mobile-phone services in Europe may cost only $100 billion, half what was expected last month, as phone companies team up to reduce competition by making joint bids.

Ben paid 870 million guilders for one of the smaller licenses. Telfort, a unit of British Telecommunications Plc, paid 948 million guilders, Ben said. Dutchtone, a unit of France Telecom SA, paid 960 million guilders, Ben said.

Versatel Telecom International NV dropped out of the bidding for the five licenses, effectively ending the auction, KPN said. Versatel was the only bidder that doesn't already have a wireless network.

The Transport Ministry declined to give details of the amount of the bids or the winners. It holds a press conference at 4:30 p.m. local time.
