Just returned from an all-morning canoe trip on a local creek... The put-in is above a small dam in a very old town with a lot of stone buildings. It's a great spot. Today there were a lot of big fat golden-brown tadpoles racing around in the water. They seem to wait until you are halfway past them, then they wriggle and swim furiously... as if in terror... towards the river bottom. Lots of different young fish... and several turtles... I think I got a pretty good photo of an eastern painted, sunning itself on a log just before it slipped off into the water. And a beaver swam up to within about 20 feet of the canoe before diving under to return to its dam. The cardinal flowers are in bloom now and there were hummingbirds buzzing around in every direction. All in all, a nice trip... ended with a frozen yogurt cone made with fresh raspberries at our favourite little ice cream shop... (-:

BTW, the scent of flowers at night.... yes... they are wonderful... We have a white garden at one end of our house... It's not large... perhaps 14 x 18 feet, but it is filled with white phlox, lilies, Blanc de Coubert roses, white salvia, columbines, clematis, White Swan echinacea, silver-edged hostas, feverfew chrysanthemums, grecian digitalis, nicotiana... It's a beautiful place to sit after dark when there is just a little moonlight... talk about sensory overload...
