BTW, INTC is earning HUGE amounts of money off of their investments....isn't this a GOOD thing?????

It works for CMGI.

RE: Running a mutual fund:

It would be interesting to see how much of this 0.25% would have been for "investment advice" and how much for "promotion", but the guy does have clout. His opinions of AMAT have been right on for many years and, for this reason, he is NOT an off topic issue on this thread despite what some of the faithful might say otherwise.

Fund Marketing Alert March 23, 1998
SECTION: Vol. III, No. 13; Pg. 4
LENGTH: 158 words

HEADLINE: MONTGOMERY CANS BRINKER FUND IDEA

BODY:
Montgomery Asset Management has canceled its plans to launch a fund it was developing with Robert Brinker,a radio show host and publisher of the MarketTimer newsletter. The firm's executive committee made the decision because the firm is already working on a number of other projects, says Chip Ridley, v.p. He declined to elaborate on the decision.

The firm had already filed to register the Montgomery Brinker Fund, a no-load fund, with the Securities and
Exchange Commission. The firm would have paid Brinker .25% for some investment advice and promotion, Ridley says. He says the firm maintains a good relationship with Brinker. Brinker did not return calls by press time.

Brian, the people I know of who have been thrown off Justa's thread so far combined their anti-Brinker agenda with a DISREGARD for the facts, except for Michael, who resorted to insults and other behavior which made it seem like he was TRYING to get thrown off. Mr. GreenJeans, on the other hand, has been presenting a dissenting view of the market's future, and has not had any problem as far as I can tell, because he sticks to the facts and reasoned discussion.

Secondly, Brinker's followers do NOT claim he is a guru. As for why he is not running a fund or basking on a beach, you could ask the same question of Bill Gates. I am quite sure that neither of them needs the money, so I have to assume that they are doing what they WANT to do. Isn't that the whole point of trying to get rich anyway?

As for companies' income from investments, I agree that is a good thing, but I also believe there is a case to be made for keeping track of a company's earnings from their core business as well.

Brian and Michael, how do you get booted off an SI thread?

Tony

Edit after reading the rest of the posts, SI, or any thread? I really don't care that much. I've seen many controversial topics and people come and go on SI and other message boards. The boards are all still here.

Brinker again just now on Intel's investment portfolio making so much money. What are they supposed to do, try to lose money instead? He even questions their claiming it on earnings. GE, Microsoft, Dell, Compaq and many more companies do the same. Intel has just been much more successful at it than all the rest. I shouldn't complain. As long as he's talking about that he's not talking about the technology part of their business, in which he knows just enough to be dangerous.
