Why go in ahead of earnings? If they don't make their numbers, the Street has shown that it can be very punishing. However I believe they will beat their numbers significantly after seeing Alteon's results, plus the timing regarding the new CEO makes me suspect that "the time is right" means that current management expects the earnings to go down o.k. with investors. I think the SmartMoney article will help support the stock around 48, once again if earnings numbers are o.k. Plus, I must admit that trading this stock, I don't want to have to pay a post-conference-call premium to buy back a stock I've had in my hands. I think their customer list is impressive. Plus, the new CEO handled one sell-out of a company to IBM and may be in place to handle another.

gloff,

Glad to hear that you made some $$ on ATON. The way that the stock moved it looked like a number of shorts got killed. I agree with your prediction as to ATON's return to the 120s, although the chart is looking pretty darn good right now. There is also an open gap up on 7/10 that might need to be filled at some point (recognizing that not all gaps get filled), which would drop the lower prediction even further.

Welcome back to being long FFIV. The way the stock is acting today, you are joining good company in being in the red. I may scope a few more here in the low 40s to play that post-earnings bounce you mentioned. Or maybe not, as the stock has already burned me once on a post-earnings bounce.
