DNA is only available in some murder cases, not all. It also depends how a person was murdered. If I blew you up with a remote controlled device packed with C-4 I doubt that any DNA traces could be linked back to me.

What if a dozen witnesses thought it was me who blew you up because I was fiddling with a black plastic pager, but the real culprit was on the rooftop of a building three blocks away?

Many people on Death Row are there because of circumstantial evidence and/or the testimony of fallible witnesses.
