I just read an explanation of where the expression "to see stars" comes from...

It seems that in the days of impressment, it was traditional to hit sailors over the head with a blackjack made from rope. Then you put a coin in the guy's hand and signed an X onto a contract. But the end of the black jack had a star knot tied in it, so that was the last thing guys saw before they woke up on board ship.

So much for refrigeration and labor rights in the good ole days. What with the source of expressions like these, I have no doubt that this is the golden age for most of the human species. If you showed a Middle Age dweller what goes on nowadays, (in middle class and better neighborhoods) he would doubtless believe himself to be viewing Heaven on Earth.
