You seem to be confused. It was 3 (and 2) huge
and long RIMMs that are unstable in production.
You should have noticed from Sony description that
they are going to use 16 (!) RDRAM channels, but
only 128MB each. This is two chips per channel,
apparently hard soldered and
presumably the best they can get to work stable
with this "advanced" RAM-bussed technology.
