Why is it that all the industrial scientists want to go into academia while all the academics want to make the industrial dollar?

I think money is not the highest priority to top researchers. That's why they are in research in the first place. I had 2 colleagues that went back to Stanford after several years in industry. The managers were puzzled by their moves since they were highly regarded and considered on the move up. I would have done the same in their positions. Re-energizing in a new creative and inventive environment is more important beyond a certain comfort threshold. One also tires of fighting short term thinking rampant in industrial R&D. A GEC fund manager I talked to earlier this year had the same reaction (from the money perspective) to Nakamura's move. He thought for sure that Nakamura must have failed in his blue LED research at Nichia. I think I was unable to persuade him otherwise. It's an interesting irony, the people that create the most value in our society often doesn't care about money as much as the others.
