Frank , I have question about submarine optical network vs. in land optical network.
Generally speaking, what is the major difference from the following points of view:

a) technically
b) major obstacles
c) what is the key to have competitive advantage

Also, I read that submarine optics will hit 8-9 billion $ this year.
Do you have figures for let say 2-3 year timeframe growth, and what % of all optical network( in $) will account for submarine.
I assume submarine have to be less then 50% b/c much more line will be install in land .

Thanks in advance

Zbyslaw

Hi Frank:

I had never heard of flash OFDM (we already have
coded, wideband and vector OFDM flavors). From the wording
of the announcement, it seems it has to do with
the low latency feature of the system (remember that
OFDM required the application of a FFT to a fairly
large data block, which introduces latency). Snooping
on the Lucent web site did not turn up anything.

The CTO of Flarion is Rajiv Laroia, who was the
inventor of a precoding technique that can be used
in ``DFE at the transmitter'' implementations of
equalizers in combination with convolutional or trellis
codes. He has impeccable research credentials.

Best regards,

Bernard Levy
