The PC industry is, or is about to be, "hoist on its own petard." For a long time it tried (with much success) to convince the consumer that all that matters is clock speed and an X86 instruction set. Now the consumer is starting to realize that's false, and the X86'ers don't have much to offer in its place. Furthermore, the X86 chipmakers are getting to within a small factor of the highest clock speeds they're likely to reach for a while, and need to change instruction sets, so they can't even continue the same game.

JMHO.

Dear Bob and QS: Ditto with my experience in a CompUSA in RI about a week ago. The *only* person in the computer area was an elderly woman who had been sent there by her children with *strict* instructions to buy a computer so they could send each other e-mail. At the time, I wondered if the "deadness" was due to the time, around 11:30 a.m.

Although it is only one state out of 50, I am wondering how the PA tax holiday on all computer and peripheral purchases from August 6-13 will boost computer sales in the Middle Atlantic.

I just read about this tax holiday in the Sunday newspaper. The article said another tax holiday is scheduled for the week of February 18, 2001.

Regards,

Lynn

P.S. The sales guys at CompUSA were ignoring the woman so she turned to me and my neighbor for help. I hope she is happy with the Presario notebook ;>
