Pete, Re: 64-bit extension transition

A similar dual instruction set is for Apples current PowerPC G3 and G4. Software will run on either but to gain the benefits of the extra instructions in the G4 special extensions must be provided for the software and/or OS. The applications which derive benefits from the Altivec ("Velocity Engine") extensions are typically those that are already at the limit in demanding MPU performance (i.e. Photoshop). A similar comparison might be for SSE? One can run the applications on an older processor but won't experience top performance.

The flexibility for the transition from x86-32 to x86-64 should be a real strength, assuming that it is clear that there will be a software transition to allow users to realize the extra instructions in the near future.
