Has Rambus Missed Its DRAM Opportunity?

Intel considers other memory options for Pentium 4

By Steven Fyffe

Intel Corp.'s seemingly unshakeable support of direct Rambus DRAM (RDRAM) may be wavering.

The company is considering using cheaper types of memory in future incarnations of its flagship desktop computer MPU—the forthcoming Pentium 4, according to Paul Otellini, general manager of the Intel Architecture Group. "We have a number of options as we look at other price-points," Otellini said during a conference call reporting Intel's second-quarter earnings last Tuesday.

Intel still plans to use RDRAM for the Pentium 4's initial release, Otellini said. "We still view this memory technology as delivering the best overall performance ... but this is not to say that we won't have other memory configurations to take advantage of other price-points."

It was the first time Intel has publicly indicated it might use other memory designs with the Pentium 4. Sources and recent published reports have indicated that contractual obligations have locked Intel into exclusively using RDRAM through 2002.
