Although you have a modern way of thinking, your philosophy of avoiding mature, disciplined engineers from older established businesses is probably along the same lines the internets chose. Most of them failed as do 8 of 10 businesses. If you're looking for a quick buck, LU is probably not the place to be right now, but don't count them out over the long haul. Good Luck.

Paul, Many are lifers, but many are just as motivated as the the younger people out of college to make a hit in the start-up world. Most start-ups that I am aware of do meet with the engineers to assess the energy and desire as well as ability. for the most part, I see the lifers not even approaching the smaller guys. Take a look at quantumbridge. That company is predominantly ex-LU/Bell Labs. They have been named one of the hottest start-ups in the country and recently took over 100 million in funding.

btw, springtide goes for 1.3 billion to LU. At 50/share for LU, that is a great deal. Congrats to all of the ex-LU people that have gone there over the last 6-12 months.

The past years bears out your view that >> --LU is seeing the fruit of their poor management and corporate culture.<<
McGinn should never have been chosen as CEO and that is to
the shame of the BOD. The future with McGinn is very dim
at best. The competition is rushing into the future while
McGinn is trying to repair the mistakes of the past, largely
of his own doing. The spin offs should incl. Bell Labs and
the Fiber Optics Div. etc.

I don't understand this logic. First off, obviously those who leave any of the companies you mentioned are not "lifers". I also know quite a few people in these companies who have done very well for themselves once they left the companies you mentioned. In fact, those who left the companies you mentioned, don't fit at all into the generalizations you've made. IMHO, I think you're missing out on some very good people if you pass them over just because they once worked for LU, ATT, and PACBELL.
