many answers, depending on the brokerage firm....my cash is always liquid and available, it eats up margin in the sense of capacity, as you are not borrowing, in fact the cash premiums accumulate and can actually increase your capacity, depending on the strike, common price, and how the brokerage marks it daily.

i use the sales as a cash flow generation tool....my goals are not as much capital appreciation via equities but return on cash....a 2-10% per month return is possible...

it's all what you are comfortable with, and what you require from your investments...

i do have a long term portfolio that is for the future, but the bulk of my cash is used to generate monthly returns....
