KG4, I'm going to defer to someone who had practical experience with qcom's earlier spinoff.

KG4:

Having gone through this with the HWP/A and COMS/PALM spin offs, I can tell you with reasonable certainty that all existing QCOM options/LEAPS will retain their present basis after any spin off. I presently own COMS options which will retain their (COMS + PALM) basis after the PALM spin off on 7/27. On 8/1, the CBOE will start a new set of COMS options/LEAPS which will not include PALM, and the two sets of COMS/LEAPS options will trade in parallel. For a detailed explanation of how this is being handled, see the following CBOE Bulletin:

cboe.com

The only tricky thing is that the present COMS options/LEAPS series will get new symbols, and the present symbols will be used for the new options/LEAPS series starting 8/1. This symbol change is the only tricky part and will be confusing, since if you presently own COMS options and put in a sell order next week with the same symbol as they presently have, you'll be selling naked calls/puts on the new option series when you thought you were selling the series you actually own!
