At the upper end film is a lot better for most users.

I don't think this is just an upper end/lower end thing.

At the very low end we have people with their throwaways and sub$50 cameras. Their demand for quality is such that it could be met by current digital technology, but the price gap is still an order of magnitude or more.

Above that we have a broad band of people with cameras costing a couple hundred dollars, who probably shoot more regularly, and an appreciable number of which have at least occasional interest in enlargements above the snapshot size. These people spend enough to make digital a possibility and some, particularly the techno-buffs or those who are active computer users, will find digital an attraction, at least as a supplement, but there will be some resistance at current levels because of image quality. Mind you, it is a broad group, so one can't be overly simple about generalizations about how important image quality matters in enlargements and the like.

Beyond this we have a lot of specialized users. Those doing art photography and the like will be sticking with film for some time. Those who do wildlife photography and the like will be sticking with film. Those who go to events and shoot 10 roles of film may well stick with film. Those publishing electronically will go, have gone, digital. Those who need smaller images and who derive benefit from immediate feedback will go digital. Etc., etc.
