KY, Drew, et. al...

Sony is in a position where it is forced to increase visibility either by offering discounts to the retailers to move product, buying advertising space in store circulars, offering customer rebates or product promotions,...

Right now CompactFlash is the preferred storage medium for digital cameras. None of Sony's competitors are adopting Memory Stick. Thus, Memory Stick sales will be limited to customers who purchase Sony hardware. Sony will lose money on Memory Stick because they don't control manufacturing costs directly, because they have spent exorbitant amounts of money promoting this duplicative standard, and because they have chosen manufacturing partners (such as Lexar Media) in a haphazard fashion.

SanDisk is on allocation. While I hope they do more to market and promote CompactFlash, these expenditures are unlikely currently to lead to incremental sales increases. Creating the brand name, improving merchandising at the retail level and other promotional activities are vital to SanDisk's success. The question really comes down to timing and getting the most "bang for the buck" when planning marketing expenditures.

All IMHO,
