Brazil unemployment rate steady at 7.8 pct in H1

Reuters, 07/25/2000 09:22

RIO DE JANEIRO, July 25 (Reuters) - Brazilian unemployment in the first half of the year was steady at 7.8 percent compared with the same year-ago period, though remaining the highest rate for the first half of any year since research started in 1983, the National Statistics Institute (IBGE) said Tuesday.

However, the IBGE said the jobless rate for June had fallen to 7.4 percent from 7.8 percent in May.

Unemployment in the six metropolitan areas surveyed in June last year was 7.8 percent of the working age population.

Brazil ended 1999 with an unemployment rate of 7.6 percent, unchanged from the 1998 rate, despite mid-year increases due to economic troubles.

Early last year's financial crunch pushed unemployment up to record levels, but the country has been successfully recovering from the aftermath of the crisis since in most economic areas.

Steve,

I was quite happy with the EMT results-it is my last direct Brazil holding. Goldman Sachs just reiterated their Recommended List status for EMT.
