Mani,

I believe we established that Compaq is using Tbird as well. But your other point is valid - lack of Duron systems.

Via is in process of screwing up another AMD quarter. This is crazy, but I think that when 760 is out, AMD should make 1 chipset per processor (to prepare for inevitable Via "accident".

It is less costly to stockpile (and possibly throw to the dumpster) a bunch of chipsets than sit on a million of unsold CPUs that lose about $1 or $2 in value per day each.

re:Beating the earnings numbers for this quarter is getting more difficult by the day. AMD is stock piling up the Duron and TBird for at least a month now. I am worried.

More importantly, a quick scan of Pricewatch shows Intel has improved availability of all its speed grades. AMD's "free pass" may soon be over...

Mani, re:<right now I'd be happy with a Duron machine>
Did you notice the ComputorEdge in SD the past couple weeks?
There are TBird and Duron systems for sale at four or five screwdriver shops.

One of them is PC Club which has quite a few locations in So. Cal. They were running a special deal on TBird 800 MHz systems which have a special certification from the American Internet Gaming League. Anyhow, the first 80 systems they sold on July 22 were $200 off at $1099. They were fully outfitted with 128M, your choice of Hercules or Elsa GTS GeForce2 32M video cards, etc.

I counted 4 other firms selling TBird systems and 3 selling Duron systems. A week ago, I think the numbers were 3 and 2. Not many Duron systems yet, but probably the result of scarce motherboards being allocated to the more profitable, higher MHz, TBirds.

In the San Deigo SD-shop market there are almost no Celerons above 533 MHz, so the lack of Durons is probably not resulting in less AMD market share, but is stopping AMD from gaining market share.
