"I would like to see some more co-marketing with the Digi Camera OEM's at the retail level."

Digital camera OEM's have no incentive to co-market CompactFlash for SanDisk. Many sell private label items (the best example being Kodak) that "compete" with SanDisk.

If SanDisk had the ability to keep select retailers flush with cards at a favorable price they may get merchandising considerations. At present SanDisk cannot meet demand and retailers like BestBuy use other vendors like Simple Technologies and Lexar Media. Thus, no merchandising preference.

I am a big Sony fan - have a lot of their products. However, I do not have a Betamax, and when shopping for digicams I did not buy into the Memory Stick. I did check it out, and I really liked that Zeiss lens on the high-end Sony models, but in the end, the Sony cameras were much more expensive, and I did not like the limitations that would be imposed on me by adopting a proprietary standard. I went with CF and Nikon.

They have been doing a lot of marketing lately, but again that's part of the arrogance of Sony as well. The Japanese way typically is to continue to throw money at a problem until it goes away - to give up would be to "lose face" (see Betamax, see Sony's Hollywood investments). More marketing on Sony's part looks like more desperation to me.

As camera prices come down, a larger percentage of their unit cost will be devoted to the flash memory packaged with it. Sony's Memory Stick will cost much more compared to CF because they will not be able to increase volume as quickly with a smaller installed base. Their application products will then continue to be priced higher than competing MP3 players, digicams, etc.

I think Sony has totally blown it - again.
