Dear Mani:

Re: No Durons at OEMs

With 5 pages of Duron/Thunderbird Motherboards listed, Do you think it is likely that DIY, by being nimble, could do the Socket 462 transition much faster than the slower OEMs. I seem to remember that last year, it was widely believed that before an OEM released a SKU, it wanted 10K to 100K of units on hand. Since there will be 3 flavors (poss 4) of Duron and 6 flavors of Tbird, they may wait until they have 100K Socket A motherboards. They are probably using the delay to make sure that there will be no problems with their SKUs while production switched from KX-133 to KT-133. They are probably still in verification of the new respin. It is this latency that causes the DIY market to get new infrastructures before OEMs do when the enevitable foul ups do occur.

OEMs used to wait to announce to have the SKUs in stock for the upsurge in demand. Remember, that the "Old" Intel launches used to have it appear in the DIY market before they (and the OEMs) even announced the CPUs as available.

If they do not announce before August 1 (still 7 days away), then I may be worried. For now, I can get Durons and Tbirds for those people who want socket 462 systems now.
