Pat, I am long both JDSU and SDLI and intend to hold. I also have confidence in the companies both separate and combined.

I'm sure you know this, but, there is precedent for concern about too many/too large acquisitions too soon. The example that comes to mind is CPQ, which had a terrible one year, complete with losses and other negative surprises that forced the resignation of the CEO after two large acquisitions in 6 months, the last of which I believe was DEC.

Of course, DEC was a bloated company and not doing well, and furthermore the industry was just beginning to stall a bit, while SDLI is a thriving company in an exploding industry.

However, this is certainly enough to get the most literalminded among the analysts-- eg the ones who choke over todays "high valuations" while discounting the value of R & D investments and knowledge-- to tut tut about the SDLI acquisition.

Hope this isn't bringing coals to Newcastle.
