Indian gold imports
AHMEDABAD, July 25: Indian gold imports fell sharply in June with demand plummeting amid a drought in western and central regions, dealers said on Tuesday.

Imports through Ahmedabad, the main trading centre, fell to 8.64 tons in June against 18.64 tons in the same month of last year, data issued by Chokshi Mahajan, the bullion merchants' association, showed.

Ahmedabad accounts for 30 to 40 per cent of the country's bullion imports due to lower local taxes. Right now, no one is importing because the demand will pick up only when the crop prospects are known, said Yashwant Thakkar, a leading importer and a member of Chokshi Mahajan. Bankers however said demand had shown signs of improvement in July after normal rainfall in the drought hit areas but imports were still lower than normal.-Reuters
