DJ Nortel CEO -2: Beefing Up Optical Components >NT

NEW YORK (Dow Jones)--Nortel Networks Corp. (NT) is beefing up its optical
components unit, which has been the subject of sale rumors.
Nortel Chief Executive John Roth told CNBC he would not discuss rumors that
his company is planning to sell the business to Corning Inc. (GLW) for nearly
$100 billion, and only stressed expansion of the unit.
"We're investing very heavily in optical components," he said Wednesday
morning. "Our strategy to focus on the optical Internet, the wireless Internet,
is paying handsome dividends, and Nortel's just enjoying unprecedented growth in
both revenue and earnings."
Nortel announced Tuesday that it would invest $1.9 billion to increase
capacity of its systems and optical components, Roth said. "We make many of our
own components, about $2.5 billion worth a year right now, and we're going to
triple that over the next couple years," Roth said.
Nortel announced second-quarter earnings of 18 cents a share, beating Street
estimates by three cents. Revenue was up 48% to $7.8 billion, with operating
income up 75% to $561 million. Roth expects revenue to remain in the low 40%
range for the year.
