Since I first learned the temporary name of Qualcomm's spin-off early yesterday, I've had something in the back of my mind that I've not mentioned. But I've gotta. :)

I think this spin-off has been part of the big-picture blue prints for years. The fundamental strategic justifications are consistent with the Leap Wireless spin-off, the handset divestiture and the infrastructure divestiture. That being the case, dontcha think it's a little odd that they weren't able to come up with a decent name of the new subsidiary before announcing it?

If you agree with me that not being able to think of a cool name for the new company is NOT the reason for the temporary name, what is the real reason? I think it's because management anticipates any number of possibilities having to do with a major GSM partner, one of which might be a significant equity stake in the new company that it would be appropriate to reflect the nature of that partnership in the new name.

That's my prediction. Hold me accountable. :)
