I was not taking sides on the relative charitableness of Democrats versus Republicans. As it happens, my wife is a professional fund- raiser, and there is plenty of willingness to give by the affluent, if one makes an effective case to the right people. Some of it is self- interested, some of it has to do with civic pride or furthering values one holds dear, and there are other motives. The reason I quoted Adam Smith is because general prosperity depends not on charity, but productive investment and the market, and therefore it should be appreciated that all of those Republicans are actually making sure that there is food to eat, clothes to wear, and jobs to fill.........
