<<This SPINCO = gorilla or royalty question deserves some more discussion, imo.>>

This requires further unfolding of events to determine. I would be extremely interested in seeing how they leverage HDR for use in not just cell phones, but laptops and other appliances. Even if W-CDMA turns out to be a royalty game, maybe HDR can turn into a Gorilla game. Especially if they can roll out quickly and overlay on GSM networks. In the CC, it was mentioned that HDR manufacturing will be transferred to Spinco, but no mention of HDR patents. A x-license with one GSM player could go a long way towards leveraging into Gorillahood.

A comparison of Intel and Spinco in terms of Gorillahood is tough. Intel's value chain consists of the manufacturers of the supporting chips and motherboard makers who standardize on Intel specs. In the past, Intel has thrown AMD off balance by moving to a new slot architecture and making AMD's processors pin incompatible. Intel could do this because they controlled 80% of processor manufacturing capacity in the world. Inspite of all this, Intel's market share has slipped in recent years. So far, I can't see that kind of leverage for Spinco yet.
