Doren,

Type I and Type II CompactFlash cards are interchangeable to a degree.
Type I cards fit in Type I and Type II slots.
Type II cards fit in Type II slots.

Right now only CF+ appliances (LAN cards, 56K Modems, bar code scanners) and the microdrive utilize Type II slots.

I would by the largest capacity CF I you can afford.
For digital photography in the 2.1 megapixel range and above you should be aiming in the 48 to 64 MB range.

Hope this helps.

Doren, buy type I CF, that's the only one that works on most digital cameras. The 990 takes only type I. The only device supporting type II that I have is the casio E115, which I just got as an upgrade to my E-105.
