If Furukawa dumped a bunch of shares into the hands of the funds, then the effective float wouldn't have been reduced that much.

Furukawa has been steadily liquidating its JDSU holdings. I'm sure they jumped at the chance to unload a bunch without adversely affecting JDSU's share price.
