if I strive for the cleanest picture I would either (1) set the record mode for the highest quality, which consumes the greatest amount of space on the hard drive

Basically, which MPEG2 encoder do you think would give you the best quality/MB of space? The MPEG2 encoder used by the DBS broadcasters or the one in the TiVo or Replay box? I think it's an advantage you might as well take advantage of.

If your TiVo is part of your programming contract, then I would think that your option to shut-off TiVo would not exist w/o a "modification" to the contract.

TiVo would probably be an add-on charge to your existing subscription. If you want to cancel, you would just cancel the TiVo part of your subscription. To ensure no funny business is going on, you can unplug the receiver from the phone line.

I dunno what you mean by "dual-tuner" exactly

Sorry, I should have clarified. I was referring to dual-tuners for watching DBS broadcasts. This is a new development, and both Dish and DirecTV have stated they will develop this type of product some time in the future. For cable and OTA programming, it is no great breakthrough, though.

But what dual-tuners allow is for you to watch a live program while recording another live program. Watching a pre-recorded show while recording a live show only requires one tuner.
