JDS Uniphase reports $419-million US net loss for fourth quarter

TORONTO (CP) - JDS Uniphase Corp. (NasdaqNM:JDSU - news) (JDU) lost $419-million US in the fourth quarter and more than twice that for its last fiscal year as the costs of acquisitions and other expenses took a bite out of the bottom line of the Canadian-U.S. producer of fibre-optic telecom equipment.

Despite the big net loss, the Ottawa-area firm noted sharply higher sales for fiscal 2000, fuelled by strong demand for its advanced communications components and by a series of costly acquisitions.

After taking into account the acquisitions and other expenses, the company said Wednesday it had a $905 million US net loss, or $1.25 a share, for the year ended June 30. For the fourth quarter, the $419-million loss amounted to 54 cents a share.

Results for the quarter didn't include those of E-Teck Dynamics Inc., which was acquired on June 30, 2000, or from the proposed all-stock purchase of California based SDL Inc., which was valued at $41 billion US when it was announced this month.

Sales for the year were $1.43 billion, 2.4 times the comparable combined 1999 sales reported by JDS Fitel Inc of Ottawa and California-based Uniphase Corp, which merged June 30, 1999.

Sales for the fourth quarter were $524 million, 2.7 times the comparable sales of $192 million for the quarter ended June 30, 1999.

Since its merger into JDS Uniphase, the company has had its head offices in San Jose, Calif. and its main operations in the Ottawa suburb of Nepean. © The Canadian Press, 2000
