I just got back from the DSL2000 conference in Chicago.
The one thing that impressed me the most was the Alcatel booth.
They had a display showing all the XDSL internal modem cards that use the Dynamite DMT chip set from Alcatel that the different manufactures made their internal modems with.
It really surprised me to see how many companies make internal modems, such as
3COM, Compaq, Intel, Dell, Efficient, Copper Mountain, and IBM.
IBM’s internal ADSL modem was by far the most impressive because of how small and integrated it was.
Weather IBM’s modem works well still remains to be seen. Did not see a Westell internal modem, too bad.
What I would guess is that in the next year or so internal ADSL modems for new PC’s will be the norm for residential users and external modems will be the choice for businesses because of flexibility.
Will be interesting on how this all turns out a year from now.
