what do i think of Amazon? reminds me of that old line the Euros ask of us: you know, a Frenchy will say, "Zo, what do zee Americans zink of zee French?"

uh, we don't.

as a stock, i like and use Amazon about as much as i like and use Xerox. if i had to pit them in a head-to-head though, the latter wins out cuz i'm way more irritated when the copy machine goes down.

speaking of blowing it, did you hear that Amazon's site was on the fritz for 40 minutes a couple of hours before the report was released? are you kidding me? i'd like to give a firm handshake to the short who engineered that brilliant denial of service.

on the site at noon: "We're sorry, but our store is closed temporarily. We expect to be back soon. If you would like to be notified when we reopen, please leave your e-mail address below and we will be happy to let you know."

and this on Xerox today: "Abandon ship?!?" are you kidding me? i was working out on the elliptical at the gym and caught the tail end of that analyst quote on the closed caption. well, i haven't been around the block like you boys, but that's a first in my book. please assist me in giving a firm slap upside the head to the long who engineered that brilliant change in coverage.

i buy from amazon ALL the time, it just means they run out of cash faster.

does the joy of investing in real companies offset the pain i felt not owning the dot bombs in 1998? it feels pretty good now.
