Scott,

I'm a bit puzzled if its gossip why his source is so insistent.. and Mike is putting his neck out over this.

I don't think Mike is putting his neck out. He has nothing to lose, and I bet his site received twice the number of hits over last 3 days than on regular days.

I guess a small part of the story may turn out to be correct. My guess is that maybe Mustang will have the 64bit extension is within the realm of possibilities. (as JC speculates). This would make his x86-64 part right, but both AMD and Compaq would be right in their statement that this is not the Sledgehammer.

From the this interview with Drew Prairie it is becoming clear that Sledgehammer is not a codename for the x86-64 project, but for a product with 2 microprocessor cores on a single die (+ Northbridge).

To me, it seems unlikely that AMD would bite off so much more than the company can chew. A new core, putting 2 of them on 1 die (huge die size) + Northbridge. That's very unlike AMD. AMD is going to take baby steps. Making Mustang core the vehicle for x86-64 makes a lot more sense.

Joe

2ndly.. as Mike stated in his email.. the source within Compaq insisted this was the real deal even after all these denials.. I'm a bit puzzled if its gossip why his source is so insistent.. and Mike is putting his neck out over this.

Notice that Mike also says in his email reply that it hasnt just been OEM's saying this to him but engineers.. perhaps an engineer in Compaq is the source? (heh.. now I am speculating)

scribe,

First I want to be clear....it would be fantastic if it were true.........so its not easy for me debunking this rumor.

Secondly, it feels a little like the GTW and Dell rumors earlier this year, as well as the recent T-bird rumors. I think people overhear things or are given a piece of the info, and then its embellished and begins to take on a life of its own.

Lets hope it true.....it would blow everyone away. But in the meantime, I would rather keep my expectations low.

Thanks again for doing all this digging.
