Maz,
Thanks for outlining a very difficult technology in somewhat layman terms.
I am long Rambus and will go from there.
I have licensed technology, world wide, for a major USA corporation.
Many companies pick up licenses for two reasons.
The technology is already proven and therefore be incorporated into their product, with limited cost of the license and royalties, plus the cost of tooling This approach puts the product in the marketplace in
a minimum time frame. Marketing of an current technology,
( license )is much easier than a new product

The development of a new, but similar product, exposes the company to R & D costs and the time frame required to finalize a new product, in the manufacturing process and marketing of new technology. Costly, time consuming and many times, violates current patents and their individual claims.
Those companies who try and design around the present patents and claims, are basically not willing to pay the continued royalty cost. On occasion, a company, has the NIH ( not invented here )factor.
IMHO
Sorry for the lack of formatting
Dick

Richard,

today's systems you will require around 3.7GB/s of memory bandwidth

Sure they do, Richard. Those 800MB/s PIII busses are really starved without 3.7GB/s DRAM.

Re: SDRAM on the other hand will require Dual SDRAM banks (for a total of 4.2GB/s). The problem with DUAL SDRAM banks is it will require twice the amount of traces and will require an 8-layer motherboard.

We've been all through that. 400MHZ traces have to be spaced out more widely than 133MHZ traces and require ground traces between the data traces. The 400MHZ 16bit bus is actually slightly wider than the 133MHZ 64bit bus. It was a huge surprise to everyone, but that's probably the main reason that Intel is running away from Rambus.

On a motherboard, you get more bandwidth per cm. from DDR than from Rambus. And you get it more cheaply. And Intel is fixated on bandwidth and cost.

And I see you're back to that extra layers fantasy again, aren't you? Micron has demoed 4-layer reference boards for DDR.

By the end of the year, Rambus will be between 20 and 50 times earnings. 4 cents a share times 4 quarters is 16 cents. 20 times earnings is $3.20. 50 times earnings is $8.00. If you can get more than that now, you'd better hurry up and get it.
