I've no idea how the issue came up, but I did a fair amount of research into the subject when my son was born. Circumcision was urged; I didn't see any point in cutting anything off unless there was a compelling reason to do so. Nothing I found suggested any such reason; he remains uncircumcised.

As for what you concluded, I tend to agree, the statement of policy from the American Academy of Pediatrics (reproduced in the above URL, seem to indicate, that it should be an "individual choice" --actually, it is more like the choice made by the parents.)

Although Solon indicated that there was no religious written reference that supported or promoted the regular circumcision of babies, in his last statement he indicated that:
