<Based on todays valuations, which drive stocks do you consider the best investment over the next six months? >

I'm at a loss to pick one. Traditionally drive stocks hit lows in the summer months and start to build higher in September if the winter quarter looks good. When I cash in on some of my SEG holdings I will likely spread the money around to the drive manufacturers. I would take Stitch's advice and be cautious with the component makers until the consolidation threat is over. They may be great investments now but they have a lot of risk.

Regards,
Mark

Hi Thomas,
This is my first post to this thread. I wandered in today from the MXTR thread... My profile: I'm a partner in a high-tech recruiting and consulting business, and I also manage my own retirement account. I'm pretty up-to-date and knowledgeable about MXTR (long-time investor). IMHO, MXTR is an excellent buy right now. If you compare the company's numbers over the past three years, I think they're looking pretty good at this moment. Although I was surprised at the steepness of yesterday's drop, I do know that all drive makers are very sensitive to any bad news at all in the PC sector. I consider this drop an excellent MXTR buying opportunity (I did put my money where my mouth is - two hours ago a bought a big chunk at 6 1/4). My expectation is that MXTR will see the 10-12 range again before year-end. They're gaining a reputation in the industry for reliability, quickness to market, and a good product. They've improved their position in the PC hard drive market and have recently introduced NAS products that seem to be very well received in the technical press. I think their ability to innovate, to be quick to market with a good product, and to expand their horizons to the NAS and remote device market makes 'em very attractive.

Thomas,
<<Is this a good time to buy drive stocks or will there be better buying opportunities during the next few months?>>

Probably so, with high risk capital. As you may know, this sector has been designated by the Surgeon General as hazardous to mental and physical well-being.
Anyway, coming down the pike are massive rollouts of personal entertainment devices that should suck up any excess capacity late in the coming quarter. Throw in the potential of NAS and you get a fairly compelling story (or a nervous tick).
Some links:
<<``This will be the biggest launch Microsoft has ever done,'' Robbie Bach, senior vice president of Microsoft's games division, ...>>

This will probably be a Thomson/Seagate win.

biz.yahoo.com
.... and the pvrs (much discussed)

Thomson might be a better way to play consumer devices (along with SNE, SFA, ERTS, even TOY, Radio Shack or Best Buy) but MXTR and HDD are selling close to cash levels so deserve a long look. Only wish the Seagate debacle had not further sullied the "image" of the sector (in this investor's eyes, anyway).
