This area really isn't a focus of mine. I just looked into Gemstar's business a year or so ago. I have a basic knowledge of their business but not an in-depth knowledge of it. NY Stew is a real expert on Gemstar, so if you would like more detailed info than I can give you please PM him and invite him over to answer.

IPG stands for Interactive Program Guide.

Gemstar acquired StarSight primarily because their technology was a natural extension of Gemstar's existing VCR Plus+ business. Gemstar was focused on making things easier for the television viewer. VCR Plus+ made it easy to record programming on a VCR, and the StarSight guides make it easier to navigate programming as well as record it with a single press of a button. Of course, Gemstar was also interested in StarSight's patents on the IPG/EPG (Electronic Program Guide). Gemstar loves to defend its patents vigorously. The CEO is widely known as a patent pirate.
