Intel's planned P4 SDRAM chip set code named "Brookdale"?

Intel's non-Rambus chipset for the Pentium 4 processor will be codenamed
``Brookdale,'' Taipei's Commercial Times newspaper reported today, citing
comments Intel representatives made to Taiwan clients. Intel declined to
confirm or deny the codename.

High-speed memory chips, and their associated chipsets, enable computers to
process video, sound and other data more rapidly on the Internet and with other
digital devices. Intel for years has endorsed the standard developed by chip
design house Rambus as the only one capable of meeting this need.

There was only one problem. While Rambus prices stayed high, other
companies began to offer equivalent chips at cheaper prices. DDR, a high-speed
memory standard, is potentially an even stronger rival to the Rambus design than
SDRAM.

Intel officials in Taiwan said DDR has momentum within the computer industry
and therefore represents a possible future standard for mainstream desktop
personal computers.
