I recall looking down into the bilious green water of a Mayan cenote--actually, looking down on it because it was too murky to see into--and all I could think was how ignoble a way that would be to die.

I also recall, from my very, very distant past, a high school course in world history. The only topic I remember from that class was a discussion in the text and in class about how ignorant and pitiful those ancient people were believing, as they did, in multiple gods. And, of course, how smart and sophisticated people had become now that we knew the truth--that there was only one. There was a kind of all-knowing contempt for the poor fools that didn't sit well with me. I can still conjure it up.

Oh yes, I also remember about World War I and the Archduke Ferdinand. It seems that every history class I ever took ran out of school year at the causes of the First World War. I wonder what they do now that school years are shorter and history is longer...
