The Cold War and the Berlin Wall are traceable to Stalin deciding he would keep his area of occupation, and the fear that the rest of Europe would be next. What kind of guy was Stalin? Worse, in many ways than Hitler, but not as reckless in pursuing an external agenda. What kind of party was the Communist Party? Well, when the Bolsheviks took power, they banned and sometimes shot or exiled the leaders of other left wing parties. Fanatic Communists pursued the burning out of the kulaks that led to the Ukrainian terror famine. And no one seriously challenged Stalin during the purges and show trials. We had every reason to react badly when the various communist and allied parties in Eastern Europe started tossing their rivals into jail or out of windows, and elections became a farce............

I was scared of nuclear war from the Cuban Missile Crisis until the Berlin Wall came down. I was in grammar school, they made us wear dog tags with our name and address on it in case of nuclear attack. We had to wear them at all times. I lost it eventually, but I've got a school picture of me wearing mine. We also practiced getting under our desks in case of nuclear attack, because there are no basements in Baton Rouge. I was well aware that this was not an adequate defense to a bomb.

I used to feel fear whenever the radio station I was listening to tested the Emergency Broadcast system. I can still recite it like a mantra:

This is a test.
This is only a test.
If this had been an actual emergency,
you would have been directed to tune your dial
to the nearest Civil Defense station for instructions.
