Poll: Bush Opens Lead Over Gore

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - George W. Bush (news - web sites) and running mate Dick Cheney have opened an 11-point lead over Al Gore (news - web sites) in a poll of likely voters released just days before the start of the Republican National Convention.

The CNN-USA Today-Gallup poll released Thursday showed Bush at 50 percent and Gore at 39 percent, with Green Party candidate Ralph Nader (news - web sites) at 4 percent and Reform Party contender Pat Buchanan (news - web sites) at 1 percent. Gore had closed the gap with Bush just a week ago in the same poll....

A separate poll of registered voters, taken before Cheney's selection, showed the race about even. The survey, by the Pew Research Center for the People and the Press, released Thursday had Bush at 48 percent and Gore at 46 percent in a head-to-head matchup....
