JDSU--The JDS Train

JDS Uniphase [JDSU] announced results for the quarter yesterday. Guess what? Expectations for revenues were in the $480m-$490m range, and the company came in at $525m, up 33 percent sequentially. Not only does this company continue to grow at a strong pace, it also executes flawlessly. We reiterate our buy recommendation on JDS Uniphase stock.

One of the highlights for the quarter was the continued ramp in capacity. The company expects to increase capacity by 4x over the next 18 months. With such a large number, if the company does not achieve this lofty goal the stock will be in trouble. However, JDS has done a fantastic job executing to date and we expect they will continue to do so.

E-Tek Dynamics, which is now officially part of JDS Uniphase, grew 36 percent sequentially and, even more impressively, had a book-to-bill ratio of more than 2.0.

Demand across all product lines was strong, and the company continues to say that the only limiting factor at this point is capacity. One very interesting point the company made was that sequential revenue growth was more than 2x the head-count growth. In other words, despite adding a lot of employees, the company grew revenues faster than payroll. It seems its automation initiatives are translating to the bottom line quickly.

OKI and Rambus Sign Patent License Agreement for SDRAM & DDR SDRAM Memory and Controllers

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 28, 2000--Rambus Inc. (Nasdaq:RMBS - news) today announced Oki Electric Industry Co., Ltd. and Rambus Inc. have signed a new patent license agreement for SDRAM, Double Data Rate (DDR) SDRAM memory and controllers.

The agreement covers patents for fundamental aspects of high-speed memory invented by Rambus, which are currently being implemented in SDRAM and DDR SDRAM memory and controllers.

Under the licensing agreement, the royalty rates for DDR SDRAM and the DDR controllers are greater than the RDRAM compatible rates. The agreement also includes royalties for SDRAM and logic that controls SDRAM, as well as a license fee for the entire agreement.

``This agreement ensures that Oki has rights to these important Rambus patents which are necessary for current and future memory and logic products,'' said Dr. Masayoshi Ino, managing director of Oki Electric.

OKI is a $5.6 Billion conglomerate with over $1 Billion in semiconductor sales. The company ranks as the tenth largest DRAM supplier, according to CMP's ``Top Semiconductor Supplier'' 1999 report dated June 12, 2000, with approximately $450M in DRAM sales revenue.

``Rambus develops and licenses IP -- our objective is to produce innovations that will benefit the semiconductor and systems industries, and by licensing these innovations to generate a return on investment to our shareholders,'' said Geoff Tate, Rambus' chief executive officer. ``We believe our Rambus solution is the best for the majority of the market. Developing, marketing and implementing Rambus memory has been and remains our top priority. But we are willing to license our IP for other memory solutions as well.''
