DaYooper. Sorry. Archimedes principle. The bouyant force on a floating object (ice in this case) equals the weight of the fluid displaced (water in this case). Thus, 1 gram of ice floating on a fresh water lake displaces one gram of water. If that ice melts into the lake, it is converted to 1 gram of water and thus displaces 1 gram of water. thus the water level doesn't rise.
