We'll never know - we didn't try. We must accept the responsibility for that decision. That's all I was saying. To that extent, we are at least partially responsible for the Cold War. I doubt the American people would have supported it. Just like we did nothing while the prosecution of war reparations against the Weimar Republic continued at a time when the world was in a general depression. Ours was the "Great Depression" which was nothing compared to what Germany went through. And the popular attitude in England and France was, "Great, they're getting what they deserve."

When the Weimar Republic collapsed, this created a situation where understandably disgruntled Germans embraced their new extremist leader who promised new greatness for a much despised and isolated people. Good news when you and your children are starving to death.

So it seems that some people want to completely blame the Cold War on the Soviets. Great. I just don't think that is representative of the truth. Go figure. You beat a dog and it bites you. Twice. Surprise, surprise.
