I think you laid out all of the good objections to assassination. It is very tricky, and ordinarily better to stay away from. There are instances where it is probably better than alternatives, though. There were too things a successor was unlikely to have: Saddam's ambition, and his popular support. The danger was whether the country would stay together. Anyway, I do not know if we might have gotten close enough.........
