See, part of the problem I have with your earlier thesis is that as soon as we got a "Why Not Victory?" conservative, Ronald Reagan, in the White House, the tide turned and, ultimately the Soviet Union collapsed. Maybe we should have elected Barry Goldwater. Now you mention detente. Of course, it was reasonable enough to "triangulate" the Soviet Union and China, but maybe it was a bad idea, and we should have kept a more aggressive posture. Maybe our "responsibility" for the prolongation of the Cold War is that we were too willing to beg the Soviet Union to enter into hard- to- enforce treaties. Still, I don't feel like blaming much of anyone, I am glad that the consensus for containment held as long as it did.........
